PSHE

Leaders have created an embedded culture of safety. An essential part of the curriculum includes teaching pupils ways to keep themselves and others safe in and beyond the school.Ofsted, March 2019

At Gordonbrock, our PSHE (Personal, Social, Health, and Economic) education is designed to provide pupils with the essential skills and attributes needed to lead safe, healthy, and responsible lives.

Our comprehensive curriculum covers seven key areas:

  • Relationship and sex education (RSE)
  • Drug, alcohol and tobacco education
  • Keeping safe and managing risk
  • Mental health and emotional wellbeing
  • Physical health and wellbeing
  • Careers, financial capability and economic wellbeing
  • Identity, society and equality

Central to our PSHE education is the teaching of positive relationships, where pupils learn the building blocks and characteristics of various healthy relationships, including friendships, family ties, and social connections. We emphasise that stable, caring relationships are crucial for personal happiness and well-being. Additionally, our curriculum instills a deep respect for others, regardless of differences, whether they be cultural, religious, gender-based, or related to personal identity. By creating a safe and inclusive learning environment and using representative resources, we ensure that every pupil feels accepted and valued. This approach not only supports their immediate development but also prepares them to contribute positively to society as empathetic and responsible individuals.

In today’s digital age, online safety is a critical component of our PSHE education at Gordonbrock. We recognise the increasing role that technology and the internet play in our pupils’ lives, and we are committed to equipping them with the knowledge and skills they need to navigate the online world safely and responsibly. Through additional, targeted lessons on digital literacy (National Online Safety), pupils learn about the potential risks associated with online activities, including cyberbullying, privacy concerns, and the importance of protecting personal information. We emphasise the significance of respectful online behavior, helping pupils understand how to maintain positive digital relationships and avoid harmful content. By fostering a strong awareness of online safety, we empower our pupils to use technology confidently and wisely, ensuring that they can enjoy the benefits of the digital world while minimizing potential dangers.

Moreover, our commitment to creating a safe learning environment is central to the success of our PSHE curriculum. At Gordonbrock, we prioritise the emotional and psychological well-being of our pupils, providing them with a secure space where they can express themselves freely and explore complex topics with confidence. By nurturing this sense of safety and belonging, we empower our pupils to engage fully with their education, develop strong self-esteem, and build the resilience needed to navigate the challenges of life. Ultimately, our PSHE education not only prepares pupils for the immediate demands of school life but also lays the foundation for their future as informed, empathetic, and responsible citizens.
