This year, we proudly celebrated World Afro Day with an engaging assembly, led by Miss Barry and Mr Ridler-Mayor. World Afro Day, on Sunday, 15 September, helps us understand that everyone’s hair is special and different. Some children and adults have felt left out in the past, because of their natural hair. Today, we learned to love all hair types and by celebrating we help others feel proud and included.

As part of the assembly, we revisited previous key learning about hair types, the beauty of Afro hair, how to look after Afro hair and its diverse styles. The highlight was a live demonstration where the children watched Miss Barry’s hair being skilfully styled into cornrows and plaits, fostering appreciation for the artistry of Afro hair (Thank you to both Miss Thompson and Miss Barrett – and Elisha and Dila, who had a go, too!). Year 5/6 children also took a deeper look into the issue of hair discrimination, learning about Spice Girl Mel B’s inspiring campaign to change UK law and make Afro hair a protected characteristic. It was a meaningful and empowering day, celebrating identity and promoting inclusion. We learned that everyone’s hair is amazing – whether it’s straight, wavy, curly or coily – and it’s what makes us special!

Happy World Afro Day, everyone!
