A very sunny, but cold, January morning saw our first fixtures of the New Year.
Our first game was against Horniman and began with some early pressure from our opposition with several corners which our team dealt with well. A breakaway led to a shot by Ruben which was saved by their goalkeeper and the ensuing scramble nearly got us our first goal but they were able to clear it. More good attacking played by Toby and Will led to a shot just wide. Another flurry of corners from Horniman drew a great save from Danny. With Thomas and Reuben working hard in defence, Toby and Will were combining well in attacks and the team was growing into the game. A clearance by Horniman straight to Ruben, who controlled the ball wonderfully and scored with a dipping shot into the top corner. 1-0 to Gordonbrock at half-time. The start of the second half was very back-and-forth, with corners from Horniman and a great pass by Toby to Ruben which led to a blocked shot. The counter by Horniman got them a goal back 1-1. Straight away though, Toby went on a powerful run on their right and unleashed a low drive to get the lead back 2-1. More solid defending by Toby and Ruben allowed a chance for Oliver to break away and his shot was saved for a corner. Another shot by Tyler-Jay was saved and as we pushed up Ruben had another shot which went just wide. Horniman tried to attack and some solid defending by Reuben resulted in a corner for Horniman, which was then cleared well by Thomas. However, their continued pressure eventually got them their equaliser 2-2. The last few kicks of the game, and Gordonbrock tried to hang on, but in the last few seconds Horniman grabbed the winner. The game ended 2-3. Man of the match: Toby.
The second game against Downderry started much like our first game, with both teams evenly matched. A break by Gordonbrock allowed Toby a shot which was well saved and led to our first corner, which was cleared. More good play by Oliver and Toby led to another corner which was cleared once again. Oliver and Toby were working together well and a shot by Toby went just wide. A minute later, Toby put in a great cross but it was just in front of Ruben who couldn’t reach it. 0-0 at halftime with Gordonbrock in charge. The second half started with two quick corners by Downderry, which were defended well by Ollie. Up the other end, Ruben took a freekick not far outside their box but the shot went just wide. Another freekick, this time taken by Will, was defended and we got a corner. Leo managed to get his head onto the ball, but the attempt was saved off the line. Downderry went up the other end, and an unfortunate challenge led to a penalty which was scored. Despite all Gordonbrock’s attacking, the match ended soon after 1-0 to Downderry. Man of the match: Oliver.
